Pasquotank County's largest town and county seat is Elizabeth City. Incorporated in 1793 at a narrow bend in the Pasquotank River, the town's first name was "The Narrows". It was renamed "Bedding", and was finally dubbed "Elizabeth City". The identity of the woman it is named for has caused some conjecture-Elizabeth was either a wealthy landowner's wife or the bawdy owner of a drinking establishment. Either way, she owned the land upon which Elizabeth City was founded.
Weeksville, at the southern end of the county, was the home of a World War II Navy base that protected merchant shipping along the Atlantic coast. A mammoth blimp hangar, a relic of those naval operations, is now used by Airship Industries to manufacture lighterthan-air balloons and airships. You can sometimes see these dirigibles floating the skies above the rows of potatoes, corn, cabbage and grain that Weeksville farm families have been producing for generations.
The old naval base was surplanted by a United States Coast Guard Support Center that is the pride of the area. The largest on the East Coast, the Elizabeth City Base, as it is known, boasts seven major commands. Coast Guard families stationed here find a friendly welcome-and some perks that are just for military folks.
The town of Nixonton, on the Little River, is a historical treasure. Settled in 1659, Nixonton can boast several state-wide "firsts". The first General Assembly in North Carolina met here in 1663. The first church in North Carolina, a Quaker Meeting House, was built along Nixonton's Symonds Creek in 1705. The first school in the state was established here that same year. Nixonton is now a bedroom community with numerous housing developments, many of them offering waterfront lots.
Elizabeth City, the social, business, and population center of Pasquotank County, is buzzing with activity. Its downtown is vibrant with restaurants, businesses and shops. At the Carolina Theater and Grill on Poindexter Street, you can have dinner while watching the latest blockbuster movie. The Pasquotank Arts Council is restoring the historic Elizabeth City Opera House on Main Street to become its gallery and school of the arts. And when the Encore Theater Company takes to the stage at the Main Street Stage, you'll think you're watching a Broadway production. But don't take my word for it. Check out Pasquotank County for yourself. You'll be glad you did.
